Exam tactic: spending too much time on segment of lesser weightage (Example, doing Q 1 first onwards (Cloze Passage) instead of Compre OE first)

Vocabulary Bank (ESP Secondary: new exam segment 词语替换 in the recent years became an even bigger worry)

Comprehension OE → Do not understand the passage

Student seldom speaks/use Chinese. Thus unable to express themselves → fear → reluctant

Myth: learning good phrases helps. Truth: focus on the basic vocab to prevent misuse of phrases → become grammar error.

Myth: memorise model essays (esp in Secondary school). Truth: content is very vast. Unlikely to be able to memorise everything as it is related to social issues and general knowledge too

Myth: Practice more makes perfect(Drilling/刷题). Truth: There is no systematic strategy to revise. (Esp they need to learn the basic 手法, before you can practice questions to get the correct answers. )

Don’t know how to properly apply, don’t know how to properly form a sentence

Everything – but Busy Bees focuses on the specific area that the student is weakest in. Error-based. Teacher will emphasize

System系统化的训练:Our curriculum, materials etc.

  • Check backs and repetitive practice (deepen memory, checking application) i.e. lesson 2 will have some of lesson 1’s content so that they can apply
  • Style of teaching : a. Question based instead of lecturing b. 循序渐进 (from easy to difficult based on what’s taught previously)
  • Model Essays/ answers to ensure that students are aware of exam marking scheme and expectations – basic things that was taught so the child can see how it’s being applied + a higher level

Simplified learning (esp in Secondary as the exam segment is very complex)

  1. Example: “Chinese is not about memorising more words. It’s about understanding how the language works.”

而知之   而熟之 而得之

(Their mindset, confidence level, and ability)
Unaware of exam requirements → (After) able to improve as they know the strategies & tactics to score marks
Doesn’t 思考/non participative or share their thoughts → 懂得举一反三,积极参与

Primary: interactive, participative vs school base (sit at the desk), open discussion & teacher summarise.

Question based → students get to think and 思考/举一反三 compared to 填鸭式教学

Secondary: interactive, question based to deepen memory. Systematic way (refer to above)

When students get to speak, teachers are able to correct the child’s understanding and compliment areas that they have done correctly to build confidence.

Teachers ask higher order critical thinking questions → encourage students to think, instead of just provide them the answers

In a few lessons (participative/change in attitude)

Children are being “forced” to speak up & participate due to the way the lessons are being held

  1. Who is the trial lesson most suitable for? Everyone

Why should parents consider letting their child try a lesson at Busy Bees?

There is a system, a method. It is not just a language that takes time, it can be learned and mastered.

Busy Bees Learning Centre – Interview Responses (Refined)

In your experience, why do many secondary school students struggle with Chinese even though they are studying very hard?

Many students are actually putting in effort, but the way they study is often inefficient.
They may memorise vocabulary or repeatedly practise assessment books, but Chinese exams test more than memory. They require reading comprehension, structured thinking, and the ability to express ideas clearly in Chinese.
Without learning the right techniques, students may work very hard but still feel stuck.

What are the most common complaints or worries parents share with you about their child’s Chinese?

Parents often say things like:
“My child studies very hard but the marks don’t improve.”
“My child understands the passage but still loses marks.”
“My child has ideas but cannot express them well in Chinese.”
“Chinese became much harder after entering secondary school.”
Most parents are not worried about effort — they are worried that their child’s effort is not translating into results.

What are the top 3 mistakes students usually make when studying Chinese?

Memorising too much without understanding
Students try to memorise vocabulary or model essays but do not learn how to apply them.

What do students usually do to study Chinese that feels productive but actually does not help much?

Many students keep doing more assessment books or past papers.
While practice is important, improvement only happens when students review mistakes and identify patterns, such as incomplete answers or incorrect phrasing. Straits Time Interview
Without this reflection process, students may do a lot of work but learn very little from it.

Why do students who memorise many Chinese words still struggle in exams?

Chinese exams are not vocabulary tests.

Students must be able to:

1.understand context 2.identify key information 3.structure answers clearly 4.express ideas logically

Vocabulary helps, but language application and exam techniques are equally important.

What are the biggest areas students usually struggle with?

Two areas stand out most clearly.
1. Comprehension answering techniques Many students understand the passage but lose marks because their answers are:
incomplete poorly phrased not directly answering the question. Straits Time Interview

2. Composition development Students often struggle to: expand ideas organise story structure express emotions and details clearly.
